Foundations of Digital Marketing, Part One

Foundations of Digital Marketing is a course provided by Google Career Certificates and Coursera. This is a 4-week course that I have completed in April 2023. The course is part of Google’s Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate program which has 7 courses. 

The certification is designed for a 3-6 month period of learning to teach:

  • Digital Marketing and e-commers
  • What people in these industries do on a day to day basis
  • Core skills for success
  • Landscape of job opportunities 

This was a very interesting course providing details on the historical changes of Digital Marketing and e-commerce. The course begins with discussion on “Attracting customers through search engines and online ads. Engage customers on social media. Creating email campaigns. Measuring and analyzing results. Managing customer relationships. Optimizing an e-commers store.” then continues with the details and tools you can use for each topic.

I had a good background in digital marketing and working in this industry so I fast forwarded this course and completed this course in a shorter period compared to the course plan. The course outline and plan was to complete the course in 4 weeks. Since I loved to listen to successful marketer from Google Company, I would not get tired and would spend hours on weekend and late night to learn and complete the assignment.

My suggestion to anyone who starts this course is to take it slow since this course will be the foundation of your digital marketing knowledge and journey. I do practice what the course is teaching in my daily work from analytics to how to measure the marketing performance and how to report on those.

The course has a theme of data, branding, technology and modern practices which makes the course very  interesting. The way that the course provides real world data and examples makes the course engaging in a way that you would like to spend hours solving the course problems and you will feel rewarded once you put the exercise into practice.

As the course begins the second week, it describes the benefits of Digital Marketing then it introduces you to the challenges and technologies that you can overcome.

 

Some of the benefits for organizations to utilize Digital Marketing are listed as below: 

  • Digital marketing is more cost-effective than traditional marketing
  • Digital marketing adapts to new technologies.
  • Digital marketing tools expand customer reach using specific audiences.

Then the instructor talks about Inclusive marketing and how Google has created an all in Inclusive marketing.
